Overview
Southern Beauty Magazine is a women's magazine based out of Birmingham, AL that started in the beginning of 2008. During their initial planning stages, they contacted the design firm Ellis Wyatt Interactive to produce a flash representation of their magazine that could be viewed in the same manner as their print product. TFnS worked with Ellis Wyatt to scope out, design and implement the flash viewer over the course of 6 weeks.
Flipping
The base code for the project is a component produced by Flipping Book. At the time of the project, the component was the best solution that allowed for custom additions built around the component. Out of the box, Flipping Book provided the page flipping code and an XML import, which allowed the component to dynamically pull in pages, rather than embedding them all into the flash file.
I Can't Read This?!?!
One of the shortcomings of the page component is the lack of a quality zoom feature. To overcome this flaw, TFnS created a wrapper controller that kept track of where the user is located in the magazine. When the user wants to view a larger page, the magazine fades out and the flash file loads a larger version of the page spread for reading purposes.
